English Learners

Every language minority student has a right to a free, appropriate public education. MSAD 15 assures that every child of school age, eligible for English Language Acquisition services under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Lau v. Nichols (1974), will receive an appropriate program of instruction and supportive services designed to meet his or her individual needs. English Language Acquisition services are provided to Gray and New Gloucester students by a state-certified, ESL-endorsed teacher or supervised support staff at no cost to the parents. Students receiving English Language Acquisition services are encouraged to participate in the regular school program wherever possible.

MSAD #15 seeks to ensure that all children residing in the jurisdiction between the ages of 5 and 20 years who are in need of English Language Acquisition services, even if they are advancing from grade to grade, are identified, located and assessed at public expense.

Translation and Interpretation Services – All limited English-speaking parents are entitled by law to interpretation/translation services as needed to ensure equal educational opportunity for their children. From school registration to meetings such as Parent/Teacher conferences, parents are provided services by approved interpretors/translators who speak their language and understand their culture.
