The Gray-New Gloucester High School
English Language Arts Department

The study of English Language Arts forms the foundation for clear and effective communication and is an exploration of the human experience. Exposure to the plethora of international experiences and perspectives presented in literary and informational texts strengthens the ability to construct meaning and maintain cultural literacy. With increasing acceleration in the modern student’s access to technology, information, and media, the responsibility to explore different perspectives has become essential not only to the health of our democracy, but also to the quality of our culture.

Learners at Gray-New Gloucester High School will strive to master the language arts skills, ideas, and practices that will lead to clearer thinking and effective communication. They will be able to do more effective research across content areas, and to synthesize ideas in order to make informed and responsible decisions to shape our common future. In doing so, they will learn how to navigate an online world in which digital citizenship and intellectual integrity may be increasingly difficult to maintain.

Students will also be afforded opportunities to demonstrate growth, imagination, and creativity as they continue to develop as young adults. In exploring the curriculum associated with the courses at Gray-New Gloucester High School, students will build not only the skills necessary to be successful adults in the twenty-first century, but to live with the sense and understanding of self necessary for the pursuit of happiness.
