Maine law requires students receive certain immunizations to attend public school. Only medical exemptions are allowed under this law, religious and philosophical exemptions are no longer recognized in Maine. Please make sure you pay attention to the requirements for your student(s) age. Maine law requires the district bar any student from school who does not meet these requirements. We do not want to keep kids out of school. School health offices, administrators, and central office staff will communicate with families that appear to be out of compliance with this rule. We appreciate your partnership in making sure your
student(s) follows this requirement.
Need help finding vaccinations for your student
There are many options for obtaining required childhood immunizations for school attendance. These include:
- From your student’s primary care health provider during a scheduled
appointment or well child visit. - From your student’s primary care office, many offices will let you make a “vaccine
only” appointment which has much more availability than seeing the health care
provider directly. - From a local pharmacy – both CVS and Walgreens offer all required childhood
vaccinations at their locations in Windham, Auburn, and Lewiston. Visit their
websites to make an appointment. - For students without health insurance – the City of Portland Public Health Department offers vaccinations by appointment and through walk-in clinics. Visit their website for more information.
If you have exhausted all the above resources and still are not able to access required vaccinations for your student, please contact their school’s health office. Health office staff have additional resources and connections that can sometimes be accessed if all of the above has failed.
