Medication Administration at School

MSAD 15 recognizes that while medications are ideally given at home, there are times when a student may need medication during the school day. Our goal is always to minimize disruptions to learning while ensuring students receive medications safely.

Whenever Possible, Give Medications at Home

Because medication administration can take students out of the classroom and may at times be performed by trained, non-licensed staff, we ask families to give all medications at home before and after school whenever feasible.

  • Medications prescribed 2–3 times per day generally do not need a school-day dose.
For example, antibiotics ordered three times a day can typically be spaced across a 24-hour period (morning, after school, bedtime).
  • Over-the-counter medications such as cold medicine or cough drops should also be managed at home when possible.

If a student cannot comfortably get through the school day without a midday dose, they may be too ill to attend school. Keeping ill students home helps protect classmates and staff from communicable illnesses.

If Medication Must Be Given at School

Families are responsible for providing the medication and ensuring all required forms are completed.

  • All medications, prescription and over-the-counter, must be in their original, labeled container.
  • A Medication Administration Form, signed by a parent/guardian, is required before any medication can be given at school.
  • Additional provider authorization may be needed depending on the medication.

Please refer to the MSAD 15 Medication Policy for complete details.
