From the Principal’s Office

On Thursday May 16th @ 6:30 in the high school cafetorium SAD 15 will hold its annual budget validation meeting.  At this meeting citizens have an opportunity to vote on each budget article for the 2024-2025 school budget.  There will be an overview given of the entire budget and an opportunity to hear discussion of each warrant article before a vote. We strongly encourage all citizens to turn out to vote and participate in the process.

On Tuesday, May 28th, the Dunn School will be holding a parent information night for parents of next year’s 3rd grade students.  The meeting will be held at 6:00 in the Dunn School gymnasium.  Parents are encouraged to attend. If there are any questions regarding the parent information night please do not hesitate to contact Geoff Robbins, Principal, at 657-5050 or by email at grobbins@sad15.org.  We hope to see you there and look forward to having your students at Dunn School next year.

Literacy Night has been rescheduled: Kevin Hawkes, Maine illustrator, will be at Dunn School on May 9th during the day to meet with students and discuss his process for illustrating children’s books. That evening we will be hosting a family Literacy Night from 5:30-7:00. Pizza and other snacks will be served during the interactive stations that will be around the room. We hope your family can join us as we look forward to a fun-filled evening celebrating literacy!

3rd & 4th Grade In-Class SEL Lessons:  This week and next week, I am visiting all third and 4th grade classrooms to teach a “future focused” lesson. We are learning about five common pathways that students can take after high school: Technical/Trade School, Get A Job Without Additional Training, Community College, Military and Four Year College. Students have been very interested and engaged in learning more about these pathways and had lots of great questions! As we discuss, this lesson serves to “plant seeds” in their minds about some of the options they will be able to consider. Third and Fourth grades are great times to try new things and discover interests and passions, as this will serve them well once it’s time to make decisions about their future!

Caregiver Resources:  As our school year starts to wind down, many of our students have become almost like siblings with their classmates. They have been through a lot together! Sometimes this can lead to conflicts, so I wanted to share two 1-pager resources (attached to today’s Dunn Deal) from Big Life Journal, that families can use to support children during times of friendship or peer stress. Please find these handouts attached – one for caregivers, one for students. I hope that you find them helpful!

4th Grade Day Trips To University of Maine 4-H Camp & Learning Center at Bryant Pond:  This June, all 4th graders will have the opportunity to attend a full day field trip with their fellow 4th graders and teachers up to the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond. Students will participate in outdoor team building, leadership, and conservation preservation activities to support communication, goal-setting and problem-solving through team experiences. Outdoor recreation also helps students connect with their own potential, and as a result, can boost self-esteem, self-reliance, and confidence as they transition together to 5th grade at GNGMS in the Fall. We are so fortunate to have MSAD 15’s Patriot Parents group fund this annual field trip for us, at no cost to participating students! 4th graders from the following classrooms will participate in this full-day field trip on the following dates:

  • Monday, June 3rd – Audette, Gillis, Gamage, Skilling
  • Tuesday, June 4th – Fecteau, Marzilli, Dyer, Keepes, Rausch, Carr

4th grade students will need to be dropped off by their caregivers at Dunn School for 7am on their assigned field trip day. Students and staff will leave Dunn on MSAD15 school buses to head up to camp at 7:30am. Caregivers should pick up their child at Dunn School between 6:30pm/7pm later that evening. Lunch and snacks will be provided by U-Maine 4H Camp & Learning Center. More information and packets of paperwork that caregivers will need to review and complete in order for their child to attend the trip will be going home with your 4th grader next week. Stay tuned!

Upcoming Middle School Transition Activities:  I am working closely with my GNG school counselor counterparts at the middle school,  Andrew O’Connell-Shevenell (grades 5 & 6) and Marty Lynch (grades 7 & 8), to organize middle school transition activities for our 4th graders. Mr. Shev, Mr. Lynch and some GNGMS students will be visiting Dunn School in early June to show a slideshow and facilitate a Q&A  with 4th graders about what they can expect this Fall as 5th graders! Later in June, ALL 4th graders will be taking MSAD15 buses to GNGMS for a tour and activities. Stay tuned for dates as we get closer!

Have a great weekend  ~  Lindsay Friberg, Dunn School Counselor  lfriberg@sad15.org
