The Patriots won their first game of the season in a dominating fashion. They defeated the visiting Poland Knights 6-0. Five different Patriots scored, led by sophomore Ashleen Perkins with two goals.
The possession was dominated by the Patriots from the opening kickoff. It didn’t take long for the Patriots to open the scoring. Less than seven minutes into the game senior Liza Sturgis sent a long ball from midfield over the defense for Ashleen to run on to. She took a couple of touches into the box before slotting the shot past the keeper. Senior Amelia Cobb doubled the lead a minute later when she finished a cross from West Duffy.
The Patriots didn’t let up on their pressure, continuing to create opportunities. Just past the twenty minute mark Liza found Ashleen on a similar play from the first goal to score the third goal of the game. With just under two minutes left in the first half two of the newcomers to the team, Alexandra Portas sent in a cross that found Ellie Schlicting around the six yard line for her first varsity goal.
The second half continued the fantastic display by the Patriots, who just improved with their passing and attacking creativity. The Knights’ keeper made several big saves in the second half. The Patriots were able to find two more goals in the half, one by Anna Gilbert when a save bounced in her direction and she calmly put it into the back of the net. The second by West Duffy after a long dribble up the field, sent a hard shot that tipped off the keeper’s hands and bounced into the net.
The defense for the Patriots had a tremendous performance, making it an easy day for Ivy Abrams in goal. The defense led by sophomore Amber Fortin snuffed out all but one attacking opportunity, which was a shot saved by Ivy.
The Patriots begin their season 1-0 while the Knights begin 0-1. The Patriots will look to build on this performance when they host the Wayflete Flyers on Wednesday September 30th. Varsity will kick off at 4pm while JV will follow at 5:45pm.
